Food In Ancient Thailand

Historically Thai food consists of plants, herbs, and sealife; small amounts of meat consumption due to the Buddhist background.

Thailand always had an interesting history, and that translates into incredible, unique and diverse local food too. What’s interesting about the food in Thailand is that it evolved immensely over the years. At first, people in Thailand were focused on grilling, baking and stewing. You should note that the current region that we name Thailand was settled by ancient Chinese around 1400 years ago.

Through Chinese influence came stir-frying and deep-frying

As the Chinese people started moving to  Southeast Asia, things like deep frying and frying in general became very popular in regions like Thailand. It’s also the reason why khao pad or fried noodles are common in the region.

Another common thing when it comes to the food in Thailand is that people here always had a variety of influences from other countries. During the 17th century in particular, the Japanese, French, Dutch and Portuguese recipes became commonplace here, among with many other dishes. And there are a variety of other things too, like new ingredients brought to the region.

People in Thailand always liked the idea of replacing ingredients from other cuisines with local produce. That’s why there are a variety of Indian dishes with local ingredients that are nothing short of incredible. For a long time, food in Thailand used to be very spicy. Nowadays the food here is way less spicy, since people use galangal, lemongrass and fresh herbs in general to circumvent the use of too many spices.
