Singapore

Singapore, a city state with population of 5.8 million, consists of the main island and its 60 islets, located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula about 137 km north of the equator. The national flag colour red, stands for brotherhood & equality, white stands for purity and virtue. The crescent moon represent the young nation on the rise and the 5 stars are the ideals;  democracy, peace, progress, justice, & equality.  

Prior 1819, Singapore was known by several names :

2nd Century- Ptolemy’s map identified a coastal port at the southernmost tip of the Malayan Peninsula called Sabana.

3rd Century- Chinese travelers record an island called Pu Luo Chung
with the same bearings.

13th-14th Century- Singapore was known as Temasek in early Malay and Javanese literature, meaning Seatown.

Cultures: Malays, Chinese, Indians, Indonesian.

A prince from the Srivijaya Empire in 650AD-1377AD. While hunting he spotted a lion, which he took as a good omen, so he named it the Lion City translating to Singapura. He took refuge on the island because of a bad storm. Lion + City, Singapore + Pure = Singapura. The pre-existing trading settlement of Temasek was incorporated into the kingdom.  For the next 100 years it became a prosperous trading city with strong kings. who developed strong trading ties with the Mongol of Yuan Dynasty in China.

Between 1293-1527 the Majapahit empire based on an Island in the south of Java & the kingdom of Ayutthaya in the north claimed the city as their own. A struggle for power and land laid sieges in 1330, 1350, and in 1398 was burned down. The last Raja escaped to the north and found the Molokai sultanate, converting from Hinduism to Islam.  

The old Temasek was revitalised in? But the golden age came to an end when he Portuguese conquered Malloca, the city was burned to ash for the second time.  leaving the area completed de-populated for the next 200 years. 

During the Napoleonic wars in ?, Stamford Raffles established a trading post and port in Singapore. He was promoted to governor of Java at the age of 30 and outlawed slavery and encouraged private property ownership.
