What Are The Benefits Of Turmeric? And How Can It Be Used?

Turmeric or Haridra in Sanskrit, has been used in the Ancient Vedic diet over 5,000 years. This golden coloured root stems from the Curcuma Longa plant, family of the ginger root plant. Not only is it golden in colour and in flavour but most importantly its medicinal properties. For it is considered to be a powerful anti-oxidant and aids in improving vascular health by decreasing total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol & triglycerides. 

Turmeric has been mentioned in various Ancient Sanskrit text compiled over a 5,000 year period. Traditionally, medicinal herbal remedies were shared orally and remedies as such may predate these recordings. It was observed to have aided with several ailments including jaundice, diabetes, obesity, piles and disinfecting wounds. A paste like consistency was made and applied topically. Due its preservative properties it was also mixed with other spices such as cumin and black pepper to make a curry.
